Malee is a PhD candidate at Southern Cross University. Her research explores the identity reformulation of Tamil refugee women living in Australia, using an interpretive phenomenological approach. Her broader research interests include the lived experiences of women from marginalised communities, particularly within the South Asian context, with a focus on amplifying their voices in inclusive policy development. Her past research has also examined ethnic reconciliation in post-war societies and some popular social issues in Sri Lanka, such as student activism in the state university system. Malee holds a Master’s degree from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, with a focus on conflict, peace, and Asian studies. She brings over a decade of academic experience in the higher education sector, having served as a Senior Lecturer at a state university in Sri Lanka.
She has a deep understanding of the complexities of balancing research, parenting, and personal transitions. Malee is particularly keen to connect with, support, and stand with SCPA members navigating similar challenges. Drawing on her experience working with students and peers in multicultural higher education settings, she believes academic success is most meaningful when nurtured through genuine peer connection and collective support. She is especially passionate about creating visibility for international student parents and mature-aged students, ensuring their needs and perspectives are acknowledged and represented through the activities of the SCPA.
